Last week, Google and YouTube announced a new subscription plan for YouTube. In YouTube Red. Essentially, it’s a step up from Music Key. The main features of YouTube Red are to get rid of ads (which we all hate, but keeps YouTube going), and brings in some exclusive content. Google has brought in a number of popular YouTubers and paired them up with Hollywood producers and directors to create some exclusive videos for YouTube Red. With the most notable YouTube Creator being PewDiePie. Now YouTube Red isn’t all about no ads and exclusive content. You also get the ability to save videos offline to view them later when you don’t have a connection. Additionally you get to play videos in the background. Now that is really only for mobile devices. So you can play a podcast on YouTube and jump into another app and check Twitter or your email and still listen to the podcast.
The good news here is that those that subscribe to Google Play Music Unlimited, will get YouTube Red included. So for $9.99 per month you get YouTube Red as well as Google Play Music Unlimited, which many of us are paying for already. Those that were early adopters of Google Play Music Unlimited (Google Play Music All Access at the time) and got that $7.99 price, you will be able to continue paying that price, even after your free 30-day trial of YouTube Red.
Everyone gets a free 30-day trial of YouTube Red. Whether you are a Google Play Music Unlimited subscriber or not. Now to sign up for YouTube Red, you will need to give them a credit or debit card. Now if you have an iOS device, we urge you not to sign up through the app on iOS. As you’ll be paying $12.99 instead of $9.99. The reason for that is the 30% cut that Apple takes for app purchases and in-app purchases as well.
YouTube is one of the most popular sites on the web. Each month over a billion people visit YouTube.com, that’s roughly about 1 in 7 people on the planet. And YouTube is looking to get even bigger.
