ZTE Exec: Huawei Nexus 6P Is A ZTE Grand S Ripoff

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last couple of days, you probably know that Google announced two new Nexus handsets, the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P. We’ve covered the launch of both of these devices at length, but new info keeps on coming days after they were launched, as expected. Unfortunately, the latest piece of info isn’t exactly positive, nor does it concern the availability or functions of either of these devices. It seems like ZTE is accusing Huawei’s Nexus handset of ripping off their Grand S (also known as ‘Athena’) smartphone, read on.

A rather interesting post surfaced on Weibo (Chinese social network) recently, directly from ZTE’s Marketing Director, Lu Qian Hao. He indirectly suggested that the Nexus 6P is a copy of their ZTE Grand S (Athena) smartphone. The company’s Marketing Director actually used the’ pays heavy tribute’ phrase, but the meaning remains the same. This message was actually directed at Huawei’s Yu Chengdong, which is quite interesting.

This is quite interesting, and it will surely going to be interesting to see what happens next. Keep in mind that this is not a lawsuit or anything of that sort, at least not yet. I wonder if Yu Chengdong intends to respond to this post via Weibo in the coming days or not. Huawei and ZTE are in the very top of China-based smartphone OEMs list, these are two heavyweight companies.

Aside from looking similar to ZTE Grand S, Huawei Nexus 6P really doesn’t have a lot in common with ZTE’s handset. The Grand S was announced back in January 2013, and truth be told, its design somewhat reminds us of Nokia 808 Pureview which was announced 11 months before ZTE’s Grand S handset. If you’d like to know more about Google’s newest Nexus handset, visit our Nexus 6P page. That is more or less it, let’s wait and see if Huawei decided to respond to ZTE or not, but ZTE will hardly sue over this or anything of the sort. Either way, we’ll keep you in the loop, stay tuned for more info.
