Tronsmart has been one of those accessory manufacturers that has really been pushing the envelope when it comes to Quick Charge 2.0 compatible products. Not only do we have car chargers, but we have desktop charging hubs and turbo chargers available from Tronsmart. The company has also already released some Quick Charge 3.0 products available for sale (which both the LG G Vista 2 and HTC One A9 support). But today, we’re here to look at a Quick Charge 2.0 product, and it’s a car charger. You might think that all car chargers are built the same, charge the same way and speed, but that’s not necessarily true. Many car chargers out there are either one port, or have multiple ports with just one port doing Quick Charge 2.0. Tronsmart has Quick Charge 2.0 technology in both ports. Meaning you can charge your smartphone fast using either port on the car charger. So let’s have a look at this Quick Charge 2.0 Car Charger from Tronsmart
So, inside the box we get the car charger. As well as two USB to micro USB cables and an instruction manual, and that’s about it. What’s interesting and a bit surprising is that Tronsmart did include two USB cables with this car charger. Typically companies include just one, even if the product has multiple ports. So Tronsmart gets some points for that. Both cables seem to be about the same length, and work just fine. There are no Lightning cables for iPhones nor USB Type-C cables included. So if you have one of the new Nexus phones (the Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P) you’ll need to bring along your own cable to charge your phone in the car.
Now just because this car charger from Tronsmart has Quick Charge 2.0, doesn’t mean that if you have a device that doesn’t support Quick Charge 2.0 you can’t use it. Quick Charge 1.0, 2.0 and no 3.0 are all backwards compatible. So it can charge devices that do not support the standard without overcharging them. Also for those with USB Type-C devices like the OnePlus 2, Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P, bring your own USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable and plug it in, it’ll work just fine. We tested it with both the Meizu Pro 5 and the ZUK Z1, both of which are USB Type-C devices, and no issues here.
Charging times are still not quite as fast as what we would see on devices plugged into the wall outlet at home, and that’s likely due to the amount of power that is available in the car. That said, the Moto X Pure Edition was still able to charge quite quickly. Keep in mind that the Moto X Pure Edition does have a 3000mAh battery inside, and it was able to get to around 50% full in a little under an hour. Not quite as fast as the Turbo charger that Motorola includes with the Moto X Pure Edition, but pretty close. Arguably much faster than using a regular car charger to charge the device up. Using Ampere, we were seeing speeds of around 3510mA, just a bit slower of the 4100mA we normally get out of a turbo charger plugged into the wall. Of course, when you plug in two devices to the charger, that’s when you start to notice that the speeds slow down because it’s charging more items.
The design of the Tronsmart Quick Charge 2.0 Car Charger is quite sleek. It’s not made of shiny or glossy plastic like some of the other car chargers are. It almost feels like a polycarbonate material. It’s also pretty lightweight, although that is expected from a car charger. It’s small and compact, so you could put it in your glove box when you’re not using the charger, if you so choose. It’s a fairly thin charger too, so when plugged into your port in the car it’s not in the way of others or other stuff in the vehicle. For example, in my car, it could get in the way of the cup holder or ash tray. But because of how thin and sleek it is, it stays clear of both the cup holder and ash tray. Making for a pretty nice design here from Tronsmart.
One of the things that many people are usually worried about when buying car chargers, especially when they are a bit cheaper compared to their competitors, is safety. We’ve all heard the stories of people’s smartphones catching on fire at night, and blowing up. Well that won’t happen here with the Tronsmart Quick Charge 2.0 Car Charger. Simply because the materials and premium circuitry used here, fully protect against overcharging or overheating of the device. And it also ensures safe and fast charging. This is to give everyone peace of mind when ordering their car charger. But it is also their safety guarantee. Of course, in our time of using the car charger, we haven’t had a single issue with a device overheating or overcharging.
As far as Quick Charge 2.0 car chargers go, this is one of my favorites. It’s one of the few that has more than one port and can do Quick Charge 2.0 from both of its ports. Making it a pretty unique car charger. So you can use either port and charge your smartphone quickly and easily with it. We’d definitely recommend this car charger to anyone out there looking for a Quick Charge 2.0 car charger. Especially one with more than one port as this allows both the driver and passenger to charge their smartphone at the same time.
