Smaller components have made it possible to make smaller and more personal devices known as wearables, which typically offer the ability to communicate with smartphones. The most common wearables include wristbands to measure several fitness-related activities and watches which can also show notifications on their color displays. Wearable devices are also considered fashion accessories, so they are often designed to look good and more recently, rings, brooches and bracelets have become available with technology that makes them “smart”. Now, there’s a new bracelet called Gemio that is described as a “social wearable for teens”, it’s meant to celebrate real-life relationships and help teens to express themselves.
The Gemio bracelet uses a Bluetooth Low Energy connection to pair with your friends’ bracelets so you can communicate with them when they’re close. It includes twenty RGB LEDs to backlight the bracelet creating a palette of millions of colors and besides customizing the looks of the bracelet and complementing your outfit, these lights are used to send light messages to your friends, you can even send a single message to all of your friends at once. You can also assign a specific color to each of your friends, so the bracelet will light up in that color when that friend is within a range of 50 feet to 100 feet to let you know who is close.
The bracelet is also able to recognize certain gestures live waves, high fives or handshakes, so you can program different light patterns to work with them and the bracelets can be paired using them, as well. There’s a “Stealth Mode”, which will make the bracelet vibrate instead of lighting up in order to avoid attracting attention. The Gemio bracelet features wireless charging and it also includes a microphone that listens to the music that’s being played in order to light to the beat. There are over 30 designs to choose from distributed in 8 collections, but more designs will keep coming, plus, the gemsets are swappable, so you can trade some of them with your friends to create a unique bracelet. The Gemio bracelet can be pre-ordered for $80, $85 for one belonging to the Designer’s Collection and $95 for the Bling collection, which includes translucent pieces in several tones. The gemsets can be purchased separately for $20 or $25 for the ones in the Bling collection. Deliveries are expected on Spring 2016 and currently, the bracelet will only work with iOS devices, but Android support is expected in the future along a companion app for both platforms.
