Google’s camera app was once an offering that was only found on stock Android devices like the Nexus lineup, but some time ago Google launched it onto the Play Store for all and anyone using an Android device of nearly any make or model. Earlier today the Google Camera app was updated which brought in some changes like an updated UI. This should bring anyone using the Google Camera to version 3.1, and if you’re currently using a device that’s running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow the UI should appear as it does on the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. These of course, aren’t the only changes and if you didn’t want to wait for the app to update on its own you can also grab the apk to install it manually.
In addition to the UI redesign for those running Android Marshmallow, version 3.1 for the Google Camera also introduces Auto HDR+ to a few different phones. If you’re using a Nexus 6 from last year for example, you should now be able to switch between the different HDR+ modes more quickly with the automatic HDR+ now being there. Google also seems to have tweaked the SmartBurst option on the Nexus 6P to where you can still take burst shots after turning SmartBurst off. If you used SmartBurst often but wanted the ability to take any amount of burst shots without using it, this version of the app seems to address the issue of this not being possible before.
A feature many may be familiar with inside of the Google camera is the ability to snap a single still photo during video recording, just by tapping on the screen after recording has already started, allowing users to grab shots while video is being captured without interruption. Now, in version 3.1, during video capture the Google Camera will instead focus on the point in the video that you tap on screen. With this change in place, it isn’t readily explained how still photos can be taken while recording video for those who enjoyed using this feature.
