Google made a couple of announcements earlier today regarding its Docs, Sheets, and Drive apps, and have recently rolled out updates to each of them, with Docs and Sheets on Android getting some new features and improvements, while Google Drive’s wep app got an update to organization. If you’re an avid user of any of the services on either platform, you should already be seeing the updates come through or completed, and while these won’t be major changes they are updates to look out for as the changes could help to make the user experience better for you.
With Google Drive for the web, Google has made one simple improvement aimed at making things easier to find. The change pertains to the recent tab, as it now sorts things in a smarter format than it did prior to today’s update. Google has taken the “last modified,” “last modified by me,” and “last opened by me” labels and has removed them. In their place is now a new “dynamically-generated” view that categorizes things by action of the user. Although this change takes effect, Google has stated they have not gotten rid of the time-based organization that you see, as things are still separated out by day, week, month, and earlier.
When it comes to Docs and Sheets, the updates are focused on team communication. One of the biggest features for apps like Docs and Sheets is the collaboration effort made available to teams of people using the apps for work, and part of this collaboration is being able to comment on changes and things that improving, and Google has enhanced the comments sections for both Docs and Sheets. In Docs, Google has made it possible to see both comments and suggestions in the print layout view. In addition, it’s now simpler to resolve, reject, accept, or close those comments on mobile so they don’t need to be done from the web apps on desktop. When it comes to the Sheets app, users can now view more than 400 new fonts that were added to the web version of Sheets last week, and perhaps the biggest change is that users can now reply to existing comments or add new comments from within the app. Google states that these updates likely will take the next few days before users will notice the new features as the roll out is going at a gradual pace.
