South Korean consumer electronics company, LG, has reportedly launched a brand new mid-range smartphone in Russia called the LG Ray. The device is priced at 14,990 Rubles in the country, which translates to about $232 in US currency. According to the press release from the company, the device is going to be offered in two different colors – Black and Gold. It remains to be seen how well the smartphone is received by the media and the paying customers in the country, but just the one look at the spec-sheet is probably enough to tell you that it isn’t exactly the most powerful handset in its class. It is however worth remembering that hardware specs alone do not a phone make, so it could still turn out to be a decent enough device for the price depending on what’s on offer on the software side of things.
As per the listing of the device on LG’s official Russian site, the Ray features a 5.5-inch display with a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The handset is powered by a MediaTek MT6592M SoC, which comes with an octa-core application processor clocked at a maximum frequency of 1.4 GHz. As for the available RAM, the LG Ray comes with only 1 GB of it, along with 16 GB of built-in storage capacity. That however, can be expanded by up to 32 GB with the help of a microSD card, thanks to the presence of an expansion slot within the phone. As for the available imaging options on the LG Ray, the phone comes with a 13-megapixel rear-facing primary camera that supports 1080p video recording. The front-facing selfie-cam on the handset meanwhile, comes with a rather large 8-megapixel sensor, keeping in line with the recent trend of ever-larger sensors for selfie duties, meaning the phone is well and truly targeted at the young and the young at heart.
Finally, coming to the battery, the device carries a 3,000 mAh unit, which should be decent enough for the chipset and a 720p display, even though it’s a fairly large one. There’s no word on the Android version that’s pre-loaded on the device, but either version of Lollipop would probably be a good guess. It remains to be seen how the Russian market receives this phone, and also, if LG will decide to expand the availability of the handset globally at some stage in the future.
