Bluetooth headphones have become something of a hit and miss category within personal audio. Some like Jabra and Sennheiser have got it right, while others keep on missing the mark. It’s not easy making a set of headphones, using Bluetooth which compresses sound, to sound as good or even close to a good pair of wired headphones. One New York based company that hopes it has got not just the sound, but the build and overall look right is Master & Dynamic. Creators of the incredibly premium MH40 headphones we reviewed some time ago now, they’re back with a wireless version, dubbed the MW60.
Designed to last for years of use while also sounding great, the MW60 are a Bluetooth 4.1 aptX pair of wireless headphones that have a 15-hour listening battery life. More than that however, the New York firm is bringing their signature warm, rich and detailed sound to the MW60 and claim that these will “achieve maximum audio clarity”. There’s no denying that, at $549, these aren’t cheap. However, the MW60 are “appointed with the highest-quality materials” which includes a genuine leather headband (which houses the antenna worked into the headband) as well as memory foam ear pads that are finished in lambskin leather. Much like the original MH40s, these are designed to last and last, and the ear pads are removable. Wireless means mobile, and these are foldable for easy transport, and with the package there is also a cable for 3.5mm listening when you’ve ran out of juice as well as a carrying pouch.
Much like other Master & Dynamic products, these are clearly not designed for the everyday listeners, but those that want a quality sound signature in a form factor that looks good and is built to last. It’s refreshing to see a US-brand like this one continue to release new products and even if the price tag isn’t for everyone, it’s nice to have another good wireless set of headphones to consider.
