Although Sony makes great phones in terms of specs and overall features, the company has struggled to make money from them. Since Japan is one of the largest electronics consumer markets in the world, it is crucial for Sony to make some sales in their own country. With this in mind, one of the company’s newest flagship phones, the Xperia Z5 Compact, has been just released in Japan. Announced early in September during the IFA 2015 event, the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact has been around for a while in other countries, but interestingly enough, it has only arrived in Sony’s homeland Japan as of today. Smartphone sales over there happen through phone carriers and NTT DoCoMo, the country’s largest carrier was actually the one announcing the device, which followed the standard Sony Xperia Z5 launched at the end of October.
The Japanese Xperia Z5 Compact is available in all four colors – Coral, Graphite Black, White and Yellow and will sell for $688. Differently from the regular Xperia Z5, the Xperia Z5 Compact will be an NTT DoCoMo exclusivity, which will likely limit the number of devices Sony will be able to sell since consumers are deeply tied to their carriers. The same will happen with the Z5 Premium, the bigger sibling of the series with a 5.5-inch display featuring a whopping 4K resolution as the device is set to arrive within a few weeks.
If you are unfamiliar with this phone’s specs, this is the smallest of the new Xperia Z series devices from Sony, featuring a 4.6-inch screen with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels using Sony’s Triluminos display technology. With a powerful Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor running at 2 GHz under the hood and an Adreno 430 GPU, this little phone comes with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage with support for microSD cards of up to 200 GB, with a 2700 mAh battery to juice up everything. The main camera sensor is 23MP while the front camera is 5.1MP. The Xperia Z5 family features a unique placement for the fingerprint reader, which is located inside the power button on the side, and they also offer a welcoming IP68 water and dust resistance, something which has been a loved and familiar feature for many Xperia devices.
