Sony's Xperia Z5 Premium Lands On Canadian Carrier 'Bell'

Earlier in the year, Sony refreshed their flagship device line with the Xperia Z5 range, which consists of three individual models. There’s the Xperia Z5, the Xperia Z5 Compact and the Xperia Z5 Premium. The Xperia Z5 is based around a 5.2-inch, 1080p Sony display panel whereas the Xperia Z5 Compact uses a 4.6-inch, 720p resolution screen and the Xperia Z5 Premium has a 5.5-inch panel packing a 4K screen, that is, effectively 2160p or 2,160 by 3,840 pixel resolution. Now, if you think that a 4K resolution screen is very much overkill on a 5.5-inch display panel, you are now alone as Sony use some clever software tricks in order to optimize the display depending on what the device is doing. Most of the time, the display runs at a lower effective resolution, which reduces power consumption and heat output of the processor and display hardware. However, when the device is being used for video, the handset switches to the full 2160p resolution mode.

All three models use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, which has a maximum clock speed of 2.0 GHz and is backed up by 3 GB of RAM for the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium, but comes with 2 GB of RAM for the Xperia Z5 Compact. Each device uses a 23MP pixel Sony camera, which is an improvement over Sony’s 20.7MP unit used in the Z3 and earlier Xperia flagship devices. The chassis features Sony’s water and dust proofing chassis technology. The Xperia Z5 Premium is at the top of Sony’s Xperia device family, currently running Android Lollipop although Sony are working on Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the device. The Xperia Z5 is finished in 3,430 mAh rechargeable battery.

Sony have updated or refreshed their Xperia Z-line of flagship devices every six months and the Z5 family was officially unveiled in early September, almost three months ago. There are a few reasons why Sony refreshes its device line so frequently but one of the unfortunate side effects is that it means by the time a carrier has tested and approved a device, it can be a few months into that particular product line and the next iteration is only a few short months away. With this in mind, Bell of Canada have announced that the Xperia Z5 Premium is now available for customers priced at $299.99 on a two-year plan or $749.99 off contract.
