USB Type-C has been off to a rocky start. We’ve had OnePlus use it in their OnePlus 2, in addition to Google using it in the Chromebook Pixel, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Many buyers of the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X thought that they could pick up a OnePlus 2 USB Type-C cable and use it with their new Nexus smartphone. But unfortunately they can’t, and it’s because it is not specced the same as the port for the Nexus 5X or 6P. This isn’t OnePlus’ fault seeing as their cable was made for their product and not the new Nexus.
One of Google’s engineers that worked on both the Chromebook Pixel and the new Nexus devices, has been testing out and reviewing USB Type-C cables over on Amazon. And letting everyone know which one’s are safe and which ones are not. Today, Benson Leung, posted another review on Amazon, which is in regards to the Cambond Type-A to Type-C cable that is 6.6-feet long. He notes that it has the correct resistor in place, and is also a great solution for using your existing power bricks, hubs, and other accessories for charging up devices. In his review, Leung also noted how he tests these cables to make sure they are specced correctly for use with the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P or the Chromebook Pixel.
Leung finishes the review stating, “this is a fine cable for your Nexus 6P/5X to use with all of your older USB Type-A chargers, hubs, and PCs. It also works great with Chromebook Pixel 2015 and will work great on USB Type-C spec compliant devices to come!” So this is going to be a great cable to pick up and should be future proof, at least for a few years. As many other devices will use these same specs. After all, USB Type-C is the future.
This cable from Cambond is available on Amazon now for $13.99, and is actually a nice looking braided cable (which means it shouldn’t break that easily, useful for those that have small children or pets). You can pick up the Cambond Type-A to Type-C cable here.
