December Security Patches Roll Out To LG G3 & G4 In Canada

LG is one of the very few Android OEMs to have publicly declared its intention of following Google’s monthly security update schedule for its Android devices. In keeping with its promise, the South Korean manufacturer has now reportedly started rolling out the December security patches to the Canadian versions of the two flagship smartphones the company has launched over the past two years – the G3 from 2014 and the G4 from earlier this year. A number of smartphones in the US have been getting their December security updates over the past few days, including several of Samsung’s flagships, like the Note 5 and the S6 Edge+ on Verizon, the S6 and S6 Edge along with the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ and T-Mobile and the One A9 from HTC, to name just a few. Now, the Canadian versions of the LG G3 and G4 have joined that list.

While the two handsets get the December security patches rolled out to them, neither gets a bump in the Android version. The update is purely a security patch – nothing more, nothing less. So, while the G3 continues to remain on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop after the latest update, the G4 retains its Android version 5.1. Except for Rogers, there’s no word at the moment from any of the other carriers north of the border about when any one of them might roll out the much-anticipated Marshmallow update for either of the two devices, or for that matter, if the G3 will even get Marshmallow in the first place! As for Rogers, the carrier has officially stated that the G4 can expect the latest and greatest version of Android late January.

While Android users will find it reassuring to see mainstream OEMs being proactive in rolling out the latest security updates fairly soon after Google doing its bit, one thing that would be disappointing for owners of the two aforementioned LG devices in Canada, is that Android 6.0 still seems to be some way away from rolling out to either of the two devices. It is also worth noting that the Sprint variant of the LG G4 received the Marshmallow treatment earlier this month, so hopefully, it shouldn’t be too long before the rest of the carriers will start rolling out the much-awaited update to the device on their respective networks as well.
