Along with the tons of new emojis that debuted in Android 6.0.1, Google also brought one of the Nexus 5X/6P’s features on over to older Nexus devices. That being the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. And that feature is the ability to double-tap the power button to launch the camera. This feature is pretty useful when you’re looking to get a picture quickly, because life happens quick and you can’t capture every moment or can you? So now you can easily just double-tap the power button and pop up the camera. It’s nice and quick and can even be done with the screen turned off. However if you do have your phone secured, you won’t be able to view pictures in your gallery (other than the ones you just took) without unlocking the device.
Android 6.0.1 was announced on Monday, and factory images were posted Monday afternoon. So far there’s no word on the rollout of OTA’s for these Nexus devices but they should be beginning pretty soon. In addition to bringing the double-tap power to launch the camera in Android 6.0.1, we also got the “Until Next Alarm” option back in the Do Not Disturb mode. Something that vanished in the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. So it’s nice to see it back and working properly again. Google also added over 200 emojis in this update, including the taco, hot dog and many others. There is likely to be many other small features included in this update that we haven’t found just yet – and Google hasn’t released their changelog just yet. However, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P users are also reporting that band 12 for T-Mobile is included in this update, so that’s great news for T-Mobile users.
If you want to flash the update to your Nexus 5, 6, 7 2013 or Nexus 9, you can do so now, as Google have already uploaded the images and they are ready for your flashing needs. It’s pretty simple, especially with the “flash all.bat” included in the factory images now. Just set up ADB and then click on the “Flash all.bat” file in the unzipped factory image and in a few minutes you’ll have a Nexus on Android 6.0.1.
