Earlier this morning Google finally unleashed Family Plans for Play Music, something which has been known for the month or so when the first screenshots started showing up for the feature which wasn’t yet widely released. This allows family or groups of people to enjoy the same Play Music Unlimited subscription every month at the cost of $15 a month, (just $5 more than a single user plan) and it allows for the inclusion of up to 6 users total, making it sound like quite the deal. Beyond this though, Google has also just opened up the ability to create Family Groups within Google Play for the use of buying apps, games, and music all from the same payment method.
Family Groups or Family Sharing if you will, was mentioned back at the beginning of November as a feature that appeared to be showing up soon. It’s only been a month and the capability is now live. It looks like according to the details, those included in a Family Group will be able to purchase essentially any kind of content that’s available from the Play Store, which includes apps & games, movies and TV series shows, music, magazine issues, and books, although all of this is subject to the limitations set by the creator of the Family Group, so family members can’t simply go wild with purchases. This kind of protection also hinges on the fact that Family Group creators must first set parameters for the members.
Family creators will have to be 18 or older to set the group up, and to be a part of the group users must be 13 or older. All purchases made using the family payment method appear to be visible to anyone else in the family, so users may want to abstain from buying things with the family payment that they may feel are otherwise embarrassing. As previously stated during the initial discovery of Family Groups, uses can only be part of one family at a time, and if they want to join a second family they’ll have to first leave the initial group they joined. On that note, users are also limited to a single family group switch every 12 months, point being you’ll want to be really sure about the group you join in the first place. It’s unclear if any users will be able to set these groups up immediately without setting up the Play Music family subscription first, as Droid Life notes that this was how they were able to see the options for Family Groups.
