Just a few days back, the latest premium smartphone from Taiwanese smartphone vendor HTC, the One A9, got a new OTA update. While the primary reason for the update was to push the December security patches from Google, HTC apparently made sure to add a few more goodies, which improves personalization options and enhances functionality of the device. One such new feature has now come to light, thanks to a report carried by Android Authority. According to the report, the latest update for the handset, which comes with build number 1.27.709.5, has added two new color profiles to allow users to better customize the color temperature of the AMOLED display panel on the smartphone. It is important to note that the aforementioned update has been rolled out to the Taiwan-specific model of the smartphone, the One A9u, which comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, but there’s no report about whether US-spec One A9 devices have also got the same feature rolled out to them as part of the latest update.
The One A9 originally came with just the two settings to customize the color temperature of its panel – AMOLED and sRGB. The new additions now offer to change the color profile to ‘Warmer Color’ and ‘Colder Color’. That’s because while AMOLED panels are widely praised for the vibrancy and richness of color, the technology also has its critics, who claim it distorts colors and gives an unrealistic over-saturated tinge to everything. With the rapidly-diminishing prices of AMOLED panels meanwhile, many manufacturers are using them in their mobile devices of late, thanks to the benefits they bring over traditional LED panels in terms of color reproduction and power savings. Samsung, the world’s largest producer of such panels by a country mile, has recently also started slapping AMOLED panels on its entry-level smartphone models like the Galaxy J2 and the Galaxy J3.
Talking about the inclusion of AMOLED panels on today’s smartphones, being the leading manufacturer of such panels, Samsung has been using them on its smartphones for years now. Of late, many other smartphone vendors have also started offering the technology on their handsets that include the Nexus 6P made by Huawei, the Droid Turbo 2 from Motorola and of course, the One A9 from HTC, amongst a bunch of other handsets from device-makers vying to have their gadgets stand out in a sea of competitors.
