HTC has been keeping a pretty decent pace for updating their flagships to Android 6.0 Marshmallow since Google launched the software, and just over the past month those who owned and still use the HTC One M8 GPe were greeted to the latest version of the Android software. Earlier today, leaked details surfaced suggesting that the EU version of the HTC One M8 is close to receiving the update to Marshmallow, stating that devices would see the OTA around two week’s time. As of just recently, HTC’s Mo Versi has taken flight to twitter to announce that testing for Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the HTC One M8 Unlocked model has been completed, and they expect to start rolling out the software updates within the next 24 hours.
This is good news for anyone on the unlocked model of HTC’s 2014 flagship device, although it isn’t specifically stated which unlocked models the update testing has been completed on. Considering this and the leak from earlier, it’s highly likely that the updates which are supposed to arrive sometime today or tomorrow are in regards to unlocked models for the U.S., though it isn’t mentioned as such. Mo Versi is the VP of Product Management for HTC USA though, which also helps to solidify this as the U.S. unlocked model.
Those with models locked to a carrier will unfortunately continue to wait for their own upgrade to Android 6.0, as HTC does not control the flow of when those updates are pushed out to users. Now that HTC has finalized testing of the unlocked model though, it’s likely now that carriers can begin to finalize their own work for the models they sold in stores. Hopefully for those on a carrier branded device, the update to Marshmallow won’t be too far out in the future. As with any software update, users should be looking to keep their batteries fairly charged up before proceeding with the update process, and since this is a major jump the download files are going to be pretty large, so installation over WiFi is also a strong recommendation. Those with itchy trigger fingers who don’t want to wait for the notification to pop up in their status bar can navigate to the settings/about phone menu to manually check for updates, although that probably won’t do much good at this very moment. The update is imminent though, so keep your eyes peeled.
HTC One (M8) unlocked owners! Great news, all testing has been complete and the update for Marshmallow will be sent out within 24 hours. Thx
