The list of devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow is slowly growing and it’s good to see manufacturers working on bringing the update as soon as they can. HTC has shown commitment with software updates to Marshmallow from the beginning, releasing the first non-Nexus phone with this version of the operating system and a list of devices that would receive the update. LG has been updating their devices in multiple regions, as well. Motorola doesn’t make many customizations to the OS, so their devices look like they are running the stock version of Android, this makes it possible for Motorola to update their devices a little sooner than other manufacturers. The company also published the list of devices that will get updated to Marshmallow, obviously including the phones that were released this year, but also some last year’s handsets including the Moto X (2014).
A handful of users have reported that their Moto X (2014) devices had recently been updated to Marshmallow as of last week, including users from India, Germany and Brazil. This phone will get updated in additional regions as well, such as Latin America, Canada, Europe, and some Asian countries, excluding China. Now, it has been reported that the unlocked version called Moto X Pure Edition, which was released in the U.S. has started receiving the update. So if you live in that U.S. or any of the aforementioned regions for that matter, and you own this phone, you can manually check for the update in the About Phone section of the Settings menu, just by tapping System update. There’s also a chance that you get a notification about the update, so you may start the process from there.
As you might imagine, the update is quite large as it weighs around 884 MB, so a Wi-Fi connection is recommended to download it. Some of the changes included in Marshmallow are Google’s Now On Tap feature providing context-aware information, Doze Mode to save battery life, a new App Permissions system and simpler volume controls, among other improvements. Some of the apps that Motorola used to include in their devices will no longer be available as Marshmallow already offers similar functionality, those apps are Moto Assist and Moto Migrate.
