Motorola is one of the few companies that still does a “soak test”. Basically what a soak test is, it’s a way for Motorola to test out a new OS update with a small group of users, and make sure nothing is terribly wrong with the update before sending it out to the masses. Sure, Verizon and Motorola both test out the update before this, but there are some bugs are not found, so it’s good to get it out in the real world and tested by some actual customers first. Soak tests are usually the final update, and if the soak test is successful, you’ll see the same build roll out to everyone within a few days, sometimes before the test is even over.
Right now, Motorola is starting a soak test for their newest smartphone, the Droid Turbo 2. Which is also known as the Moto X Force outside of the US. The Droid Turbo 2 has an unbreakable display, as well as some pretty high-end specs. The Droid Turbo 2 is also exclusive to Verizon, and usually those exclusives are late to get updates. So while this could be Android 6.0 Marshmallow, it likely isn’t. We all remember what happened with the Droid Turbo last year, and how long it took to get Lollipop right?
Earlier this week, Verizon started rolling out updates to a few of their devices for WiFi Calling. So that’s likely what this soak test is. And there is likely to be some bug fixes in there as well. Currently Motorola is just getting the soak test set up right now, so the update hasn’t rolled out to anyone just yet. Hence why we are unsure of what this update actually entails. We should know more in the next few days, once the update rolls out to the small number of people in the group that are soak testing the update. And if there are no issues with the update, we should see it rolling out to everyone on Verizon by the end of next week, if not sooner. Sometimes Motorola will decide to kill the soak test and just roll out the update to everyone instead.
