Google introduced their first OnHub internet router a few months ago, it is an interesting device as it uses software to find the best WiFi connection available, so you can take full advantage of your internet service. It features a circular antenna to provide connectivity in every direction and you can prioritize certain devices so those get better connectivity speeds. The router is also very easy to set up and control, as the companion mobile app provides detailed instructions and you can also use it to see some aspects like the devices that are connected to your network and how much bandwidth each of them is using. OnHub will get updated periodically with new features and security improvements. Currently, there are two OnHub routers, the first one was made by TP-LINK and the other one was made by ASUS, it was released more recently. Besides the functionality, another relevant detail of these routers is that they are designed to look good so they can be put out in the open where they work best.
These routers are designed to complement your home decorations, the one from TP-LINK is available in two colors, blue and black, and now, Google is introducing three new interchangeable shells to make it look even less like a piece of technology. The new limited-edition shells will be available later today and they feature a wood finish or color combinations in black and gray or white and gold, those are priced between $29 and $39. If you would like a wider selection of colors and materials for your OnHub router, Google has also created the OnHub Makers gallery, where some of the world’s most creative artists, makers, and designers got to personalize this device. Some of them feature colorful combinations and patterns while others have LED light color accents and others don’t even look like the router anymore, instead they take on the look of decorative ornamental pieces. The purpose of the Gallery is to get you inspired, and Google has shared the necessary resources so you can create your own OnHub shell. There are CAD files available in addition to 2D outlines and guidelines in a downloadable PDF to get you started. You can create your own shell with whatever material you want aided by software, if you desire or whatever comes into your mind. You can then share your design with the hashtag #OnHubMakers, and it could be part of the gallery in a near future.
