With the announcement of new Nexus devices this year, Google also announced Nexus Protect as well. Which is a protection plan you can add for just $79. Nexus Protect covers accidental damage as well as device malfunctions, however like most insurance programs it will not cover theft of the device, for obvious reasons. Nexus Protect had only been available, really, for devices not bought through Project Fi. So for those that are on Project Fi, they weren’t able to use Nexus Protect, and the Project Fi team kept stating that it was coming soon. And soon is now. So if you’re financing a device through Project Fi, you can add Nexus Protect for just $5/month. Additionally your deductible is going to be $69 for the Nexus 5X and $99 for the Nexus 6P.
Project Fi has really been ramping up some features ahead of the end of the year. Earlier this week, they also launched data-only plans for tablets such as the Nexus 9 LTE or the SHIELD Tablet LTE. So now you can use Project Fi on your tablet, and you should get basically the same experience as you would on a smartphone. And now we have Nexus Protect for Project Fi users. Two great features that will help Project Fi gain even more customers. It’ll be interesting to see what Project Fi does in the new year, as 2015 has already been a pretty big deal for the team.
To sign up for Nexus Protect you can either do it at checkout, or within 30 days of receiving your device. You’re not allowed to do it after those 30 days because you could be signing up just to get a new Nexus after you’ve had some issues with yours. And this is pretty standard for any insurance program. Whether it’s from Google, Sprint, T-Mobile, Samsung, LG or another company. Finally, Nexus users get some much needed insurance for their smartphones. Something Google has never offered for their Nexus customers. So it’s about time they did so. You can find out all of the details on Google’s support page which is listed in the source section below.
