Sony's 'PS Vue' TV App Gains Chromecast Support

If you own a PlayStation console, whether PS3 or PS4, chances are you may have heard of the PS Vue app which they announced back at E3 last year. It’s a streaming service for watching live TV channels through the console and a number of other connected devices. Using PS Vue you can get access to tons of different channels like Cartoon Network, AMC, Showtime, FX and more, all for a limited amount per month. As of today, PS Vue is now gaining Chromecast support, meaning users can stream PS Vue to the big screen via Chromecast in any room of the home, and without a console.

The only caveat is that right now the PS Vue mobile app is only available on iOS, meaning that Android users have no way to take advantage of the content unless they already have a PlayStation console in the home. This is certainly good new for Chromecast owners who have an iPad or iPhone, but it leaves out legions of Android users who may very well make up the majority of Chromecast owners. Whether or not Sony ends up releasing an Android version of PS Vue down the line to bring these capabilities over to the Android camp is unclear, but with Chromecast support available it isn’t impossible.

Having said that it’s important to keep in mind that there are currently no mentions of an Android version of PS Vue in the works, and there may never be. It’s also worth noting that the full set of channel offerings for PS Vue isn’t available nationwide either, and is currently only up and running in a handful of different cities throughout the U.S. including Chicago, Dallas, Los Angelas, Miami, New York City, Philidelphia, and the San Francisco Bay area. If you aren’t in any of these locations the lack of Android support should make no difference as you can’t use the full service anyway. While this revelation likely provides little solace for those who are hoping to one day experience what Vue has to offer, it might help the lack of an Android app sting a little less. If you happen to live in one of the compatible cities and have an iOS device with the app installed, you can begin streaming as of now as the app update should be live.
