YouTube Adds Drawer to Subscriptions Tab in Tablet App

YouTube is one of the most used apps on most people’s tablets. Simply because tablets are mostly meant for media consumption these days. And YouTube fits that bill perfectly. YouTube has gotten rid of the Hamburger slide-out drawer for a bit now, and have had tabs in both the smartphone and tablet versions of the app. The team has been working to iterate on the new design, and another iteration has hit the tablet version of the app.

With the latest update, the subscription tab gets a slide out drawer for the subscriptions. So essentially what you have here is a slide out drawer on the left side that shows all of your subscriptions, along with the main pane having the latest videos from your subscriptions. It’s a nice set up actually, and definitely takes advantage of the extra screen real estate available on a tablet. It’s definitely better than just having the avatar lineup across the top of the page, as the drawer shows the avatar as well as the YouTuber’s name. Let’s face it, we can’t all tell who is who by their avatar, especially when their avatar is not of their face.

Google had said in their Pixel C AMA that they were working to get better tablet layouts for apps. Especially for the Pixel C. And it appears that it’s starting right there at home with YouTube’s own tablet app. While this change may seem like something pretty small, it’s actually a big deal. It makes the usage of the YouTube app on a tablet much better, but not only that, it really takes advantage of that extra space that a tablet gives you. Obviously, doing this on a smartphone, even one like the Nexus 6 or Nexus 6P, it would be pretty cramped. Luckily on a tablet it’s nice and spread out and not too cramped.

This new version of the YouTube app is available on the Google Play Store right now. So head on over to the Play Store and download it and check it out for yourself. There doesn’t appear to be much else that has changed in the latest update to YouTube. So there’s that.
