Android Pay debuted at Google I/O in 2015 and while we’ve seen it start to grow in market share, it’s still not as popular as say, Samsung Pay. A bit surprising considering Samsung Pay is only available on four Samsung smartphones, while Android Pay is available on many other Android devices.
The Android Pay team had stated that we would be getting some promotions for the service pretty soon, to help bring in new users into using the mobile payment system. And it looks like one of those is launching today. It’s being called Tap 10. And every time you tap to pay with Android Pay, you get free stuff. This is running now through February 29th. And it’s likely US only.
This is how it works, if you tap once, you’ll get a free song off of Google Play Music. This continues for the second and 6th tap as well (unfortunately you don’t get a song for each tap), on the tenth tap using Android Pay, Google will give you a free Chromecast. No word on how long these prizes will take to make it your account, as you’ll be able to use a promotional code to pick up your item from the Play Store and Google Store.
The promo doesn’t appear to be live quite yet, although it should be popping up momentarily in the Android Pay app. Supposedly, there is an Android Pay update rolling out this week, so it’ll like appear in that update. But for now, we’re still waiting for the promo to go live. Remember with Android Pay, you can add in your credit cards, debit cards as well as your loyalty cards. However, not every bank is supported just yet. Many of the major ones are, however banks like Chase are still left out – that’s primarily due to Chase wanting to promote their Chase Pay app that allows you to pay using your mobile phone. Android Pay is slowly but surely beginning to get popular. And there are plenty more updates around the corner from the Android Pay team. It’ll be interesting to see how much this promotion will drive usage of Android Pay over the next month.
