Hands On: With GoPro's Spherical 360-Degree Mount

In the past year, the big thing in the tech industry has been 360-degree video and virtual reality. We’ve got all sorts of virtual reality viewers from Google, Carl Zeiss, Speck, Samsung, HTC and others now, we just need ways to make video that we can enjoy on these VR viewers. That’s where GoPro, and a few other companies, are making their stride. At Google I/O last year, GoPro showed off a 16-camera rig, for making 360-degree videos, which was pretty cool, but not all that practical. However, this new Spherical 360-degree mount is much more practical.

This mount uses 6 GoPro cameras that can record 360-degree video. And right now GoPro is showing it off at CES 2016 in Las Vegas. The company is showing it off along with the Samsung Gear VR, and essentially showing how the GoPro Spherical 360-Degree Mount can record video that you can see in a VR viewer like the Gear VR. It’s a pretty cool concept, and should be available soon for purchase. The Spherical Mount was made in partnership with Kolor. We should see plenty of other mounts like this one that records 360-degree video pretty soon, and they are only going to get better, and cheaper.
