Most of us are still eagerly waiting to hear news about when our devices will be receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the latest iteration of the operating system. HTC is one of the manufacturers that seem highly committed towards updating their devices. Actually, the HTC One A9 was launched as the first non-Nexus device to be running this version of Android, but the company has been rolling out the update to some of their older devices. Shortly after Google released Marshmallow, the company announced a few of the devices that were getting the update, some of them towards the end of last year, and the majority would receive it along this year. The list included flagship devices from 2015 and 2014 as well as some mid-rangers from the same years.
One device that was missing from the list was the Desire Eye, which was released towards the end of 2014. It is an interesting device because it features a 13-megapixel camera on the front with dual-tone LED flash and it even offers protection against dust and water. In December, an alleged schedule for updates of HTC devices was leaked, while there’s still no way of knowing if the schedule is trustworthy, it didn’t seem to be entirely made up. The schedule included the Desire Eye, which is currently running Android 5.0.2 in most regions and Android 5.1 in Japan, but apparently, the company was still evaluating if it would update this device to Android 6.0.1 (it would skip the Android 6.0 update).
Known leakster, @LlabTooFeR, who published the leaked schedule, has announced that the Desire Eye will indeed “get Android 6.0.1 with Sense 7.0 later this year”. He mentions that this is confirmed, although the company hasn’t confirmed it yet. Marshmallow will apparently start rolling out for most of HTC’s mid-range devices in the second quarter of the year, so it seems likely that the company would update the Desire Eye in the same time-frame. Since this is still Sense 7.0, there are not many visual changes to the UI, but the update contains some nice new features like Google Now On Tap, the new app permission system and Doze mode, among others.
