As you may already know, Chinese manufacturer Lenovo bought Motorola in 2014. Since then, not many things have changed, there are still smartphones under the Moto brand and the DROID series. The Moto brand includes three main lineups for different price segments, Moto X, Moto G and Moto E. Recently, there has been some news about some of the changes that Lenovo wants to make for the Motorola division. There were some talks about rebranding some of their products and today, Chen Pudong, senior vice president of mobile at Lenovo, mentioned that some series could be eliminated this year, including the budget Moto E lineup and the company’s mid-range smartphone offerings, the Moto G lineup.

The last statement seems to have been mistranslated or misinterpreted, as Mobile Syrup received a statement from the company to clarify the situation. It mentioned: “Although we are simplifying the combined Motorola and Vibe portfolio, we have no plans to retire Moto G, our most successful smartphone, or Moto E”. The Vibe series is usually sold in China, while the Moto branded phones are available in many more regions around the world, but apparently, both series will get respective successors and each of them will be targeted to different audiences. This would allow users to have a wider range of smartphones to choose from, so they can get a device that really suits their specific needs. “Moto will be our innovative trendsetting brand. Vibe will be our mass-market challenger brand. The brands will overlap in some price points and key geographies, but with different brand identities, features experiences and designs. The product brands are meant to be complementary and address multiple target audiences and ends of the product price spectrum”.

Apparently, not many things will change for both brands, which might be good for those who appreciate the overall experience brought by Motorola’s products and the technology behind Lenovo’s devices. It might be too soon to expect successors for Moto branded products while some Vibe smartphones could be presented quite soon. Either way, Lenovo seems committed to offering more powerful devices, which surely benefits end users.
