Android Wear launched back in 2014, and many of us have wondered what can we really do with them? Of course they are great at telling us the time, also showing us our notifications. But what else can they do? Well one developer thinks that it’s a great tool for reading through PDF’s and documents that are on your Google Drive account. Most of these Android Wear smartwatches have displays smaller than 2-inches, so this is going to be a bit tough. Even tougher for those that are using a round smartwatch, seeing as PDF’s are square or rectangular (not round).
Obviously, reading PDF’s on your wrist isn’t ideal. But it’s hard to argue with the fact that the ability to do this is pretty freaking cool. AppFour has released this app, it’s simply called “Documents” and is currently available on the Play Store. AppFour has a few other apps, which this one ties into quite nicely. The app is free, but there are some in-app purchases that will need to be made to take full advantage. One of the cool integrations here is being able to attach a document to your email in Gmail, from your Android Wear smartwatch.
When you open the app on your smartwatch, you are greeted with a list of recently opened documents. Which you can open and read on your wrist. You can also tap the screen to bring the document to full-screen. Allowing you to use the entire screen instead of just part of it. There’s not a whole lot of functionality here, but what is here is pretty cool. And would definitely give you some bragging rights over your friends, but not much else.
We’ve seen all sorts of other apps pop up for Android Wear that leave many wondering “Why?”. Including a keyboard that can pop up on the screen (tough to use, especially on a round smartwatch), we’ve also seen the ability to scroll through your inbox on the smartwatch and even watch YouTube videos on your smartwatch. Google has even made Ingress available to play from your smartwatch, and well the experience isn’t that great, but it is there.
