Continuing with the monthly security updates, Google released the January security update for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Now the factory images and binaries are now available. For those that want to flash the update to their device right away instead of awaiting the OTA’s for each device. We should be seeing OTA links surfacing in the next few days as the OTA’s begin to roll out. For those wondering about the builds, we have build MMB29P for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Build MMB29T for the Nexus 6 and Nexus Player. The Nexus 9 LTE, Nexus 9 WiFi and Nexus 5 all use build MMB29S and the Nexus 7 2013 gets build MMB29O.
If you need some help in flashing the factory image to your Nexus device, check out this tutorial we put together a few months ago. Keep in mind that you’ll want to back up everything first, as flashing the factory image is going to completely erase everything that is on your smartphone, tablet or set-top box. If you’d rather not have to re-set up your device again afterwards, we’d highly recommend waiting for the OTA links to appear, which shouldn’t be too far out.
For those wondering what Google have changed in this update, or patched, you can check out their security bulletin, which is linked in the sources section below. It is quite technical, so be prepared. It appears that Google patched quite a few issues in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow – yes it’s still Android 6.0.1 and not a new version of Android. And Google goes into great detail about each item in their post. Definitely a good read.
Factory images can be found here. Just find your particular device and download the factory image to get started, be sure to check out the tutorial linked above in case you need some help. As soon as the OTA’s start rolling out, we’ll be sure to let everyone know. Additionally, we’ll also post the links to the OTA’s as soon as they are available, so everyone can side load without losing all of their data and having to start over.
