LG is set to take the stage in Barcelona next month to announce a “major smartphone” at Mobile World Congress. It’s been a few years since LG has announced a flagship device at a trade show, as they normally opt for their own standalone press conference. However, LG has already sent out invites to the press for this press conference, and we’re expecting the LG G5 to be announced then. Yesterday, LG Poland mentioned that the new device may not even be named the G5. Of course, we’ll take that with a grain of salt as usual.
Today, it’s being reported that the LG G5 will feel “nothing like” the LG G4 or G3 before it. What they mean by that is that we’ll be seeing a totally different design here with this model. Something we’ve seen rumored and leaked a few times already. This report also states that there will be an “accessory slot” at the bottom of the device. Something we’ve seen from two different leaks in the past. It would appear that the bottom slides out allowing the battery to slide out as well. However, LG is also looking to create some accessories with that slot there. One that comes to mind is having a battery case with a battery that will fit inside the LG G5. Something that would be pretty popular especially with battery life not lasting as long as we’d all like it too.
LG is looking to pull out all of the stops with the LG G5. And they have too. They are announcing the LG G5 the same day as Samsung announces the Galaxy S7 (and presumably the Galaxy S7 Edge). So in order to get the spotlight, they’ll definitely need to pull out some tricks there. LG is supposedly going all metal with this design for the LG G5, although it will still be running on Android, despite all of the changes. There’s no word on any changes to their UI overlay on Android though, but there should be some changes. Whether they are big changes are some pretty small changes, have yet to be seen. But we will know more when February 21st rolls on in.
