Samsung Electronics is reportedly rolling out the beta version of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for two of its premium smartphones from last year – the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. While Samsung isn’t always the quickest off the blocks in rolling out updates for its smartphones and tablets, this time around, with competition becoming ever more intense, the company is being proactive in updating at least two of its last year’s flagship devices, now that companies like HTC have already been rolling out the latest major version of the world’s most popular mobile platform to its latest flagship handset. While there’s no word on when the final stable version will be rolled out to the wider audience, it couldn’t possibly be a long way away, seeing as the beta version is already available OTA.
The changelog for the latest update mentions an impressive array of features, including a bunch of new emojis, along with quick setting status bar options in the Private Mode, improved visibility of icons in the notification panel, the option to have updates automatically install between 2AM and 5AM in the morning with the “install overnight” function, among a number of other, thoughtful additions. The Galaxy S6 Edge sees an even more exhaustive changelog, including more options available for the curved ‘edge’ of the handset, thereby enhancing the functionality of the phone’s ‘edge’. Users will also be able to personalize the look and feel of the edge by playing around with the panel’s transparency and size.
Samsung had been looking for Marshmallow beta testers for the two aforementioned handsets both in South Korea as well as in Europe last year. Back in December, the company started rolling out the beta version of Android 6.0 to those that had willfully volunteered to be the guinea pigs for the sake of science (so as to speak). Now that it’s been about a month since the software started rolling out to beta testers, Samsung, in likelihood, would have incorporated their feedback and sorted out some of the bugs, alongside enhancing the feature set of the handsets with the Android 6.0.1 ROMs. Those already on Android 6.0 beta can grab the new update by going over to Settings > About Device > Software Update.
