Over the weekend, we saw some banners pop up of this new Smart Refrigerator from Samsung. And today during their CES 2016 press conference in Las Vegas, it was made official. Unlike LG’s Smart Refrigerator they showed off this morning, it’s not a window into the fridge to see what is in the fridge, but an actual touch screen on the door of your fridge. It’s a 21.5-inch touch screen that can do all sorts of things. However, perhaps the most useful and amazing feature is being able to see what is in the fridge when you aren’t home. Perfect for when you’re at the grocery store and not sure if you need some milk, eggs or bread. Samsung didn’t mention what OS the touch screen is running on, but we have a feeling that it’s Tizen, although that is unconfirmed.
A few other features built into the Family Hub is the ability to control music from your fridge, that’s playing on speakers in the house. Additionally, you can check your calendar and post pictures on the fridge. Not to mention, creating a grocery list from that 21.5-inch touch screen that can sync with your Samsung smartphone. Again, very convenient for when you’re heading to the store. Speaking of which, you can also order groceries and have them delivered to your house, thanks to MasterCard. Now MasterCard was on stage with Samsung this afternoon and did say that you can use any credit or debit card. However they’d prefer you to use a MasterCard. So if you do have a Visa, American Express or Discover card, you can still use that to buy your groceries from your fridge’s touch screen.
This refrigerator is also IoT friendly, using Samsung’s Smart Things platform. So you can check to be sure your doors are locked from the fridge, also turn on or off the lights in the house and do other things that the Smart Things platform allows you to do. This smart fridge is a whole lot more than just a fridge to be honest. It’s pretty cool and is slated to be available this Spring.
