China is home to tons of smartphone manufacturers, many of which are well-known all over the world. The ‘Shallots’ company definitely does not belong in that category, as very few people outside of the country have heard of this company, but they do tend to release a rather interesting device from time to time. Shallots has been teasing their upcoming phone for quite some time now, and have released it quite recently.
Shallots has unveiled a phone made out of 24K gold which costs 12,888 Yuan, which translates to $1,960. Now, that is definitely something we did not expect when we noticed Shallots’ teasers. Anyhow, this smartphone actually offers a rather solid set of specs next to this insane price point, so let’s see what it has to offer in that regard. This device is actually a phablet, the 6-inch display is placed up front, while it also packs 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card, so you can essentially get 256GB). Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core SoC fuels this phablet, and an Adreno 430 GPU is also included here. The 16-megapixel shooter (f/2.0 aperture, PDAF) is placed on the back of Shallots’ handset, while an 8-megapixel camera can be found up front.
Now, the most interesting thing in all this, is the fact that the name of this phone hasn’t been mentioned. It is possible that the phone is simply called ‘Shallots’, or ‘Shallots Phone’, at least based on how the source refers to it. Either way, this handset is quite probably out of your price range, I know it is out of mine, but for a luxury smartphone it does offer really interesting specifications. Shallots have also confirmed that they intend to launch a more affordable handset later this year. If rumors are to be believed, that phone will be fueled by the Snapdragon 820 SoC, and will cost around 1,999 Yuan ($304). Keep in mind that this is just a rumor at this point. Shallots did say they will announce a new device, but did not disclose any details, so it is possible this handset ends up costing more than we think.
