Those who use Skype will likely already be familiar with the available video calling feature. It’s been around for a decade now and through it, tons of families, friends, loved ones, colleagues and more have been able to stay in touch through digital face to face communication, all for free. Skype is celebrating the anniversary of video calling today and as part of the celebration they have announced that users of the Android Skype app (and the apps for other major smartphone platforms like iOS and Windows) are now allowed to experience mobile video calling in a whole new way that they weren’t able to before, with mobile group video calls, also free, and available starting from today or as soon as users have the update to the app, which shouldn’t be far off.
Although mobile one to one video calling has only been around for the last six years, over the entire ten years since video calling itself became part of Skype, users have engaged in over 2 trillion minutes of free video calling. That’s quite a bit which showcases that video calling is a huge success for Skype and now people can enjoy it even more while on the go with groups.
Other than the mobile group video calling coming to Android, Skype also launched Skype for Business on the Play Store back in the middle of December for those with conference calling needs from a more business-focused application. About a month prior to that, the Skype 6.11 update released which brought in a handful of other new features too, like conversation management, a robust in-app search function, group sharing, and other things like enhanced video, performance improvement and better support for sharing mojis. Skype also now has a material design UI so it’s prettier to look at, although this has been around for a little while now. Overall, the Skype app on Android has received a lot of attention over the past few months and with group video calls now available, it’s likely to bring in more users, or at the least get users to interact more with the app than they did before.
