The Xperia Z5 Premium is Sony’s best smartphone offering yet, it features a familiar design as it looks similar to every other smartphone in the Xperia Z series. Still, this particular phone was designed to stand out from the rest thanks to its shiny mirror-like surfaces. This phone has the title of being the first one to sport a 5.5-inch display with 4K resolution, which provides extremely sharp pictures and its Triluminos technology produces vivid colors and good contrast levels. The Xperia Z5 Premium is built with tempered glass in the front and the back of the device and the frame in between is made of stainless steel. It might seem a little fragile, but it is rated IP58, making it water and dust resistant. A video was published recently showing how durable the Xperia Z5 Premium really is.
The video was made with YouTube user JerryRigEverything, who got famous for bending the Nexus 6P with his own hands and claiming that the phone was very fragile. He uses the same methodology from previous videos on the Xperia Z5 Premium, starting with a scratch test using various picks with different hardness levels on the Mohs scale, then he burns the screen and finally he bends the phone. All of this situations are a little extreme, but it’s nice to know which of them can the phone withstand. Sony doesn’t use Gorilla Glass to cover the screens of their smartphones, but the glass on the Xperia Z5 Premium did not get scratched until he used the level 6 pick leaving some visible marks, so it seems to be a worthy equivalent of Gorilla Glass.
The camera lens got scratched fairly easily as it seems to be made out of plastic, it got badly scratched with the level 3 pick. The entire back could resist being scratched with a razor blade, but the metallic frame got scratched fairly easily with blades and keys. The burn test managed to damage the screen, although the pixels that turned black seemed to recover. Finally, he got to bend the phone applying some force at the middle, which made the frame snap and the power button housing with the fingerprint scanner popped off. Then, he bends the phone to the other side and the frame got broken near the SIM card slot. Some parts seem to be coming off, as well, but the phone remained operational the whole time, even when the screen was curved.
