Speck, known for making pretty unique cases for many smartphones out there, have unveiled their own VR Viewer, which is in the middle of what Google Cardboard is and Samsung’s Gear VR. While it’s not made of Cardboard, it’s still lightweight and made of plastic. The highlight feature of the Pocket VR, from Speck, is the fact that it is collapsible and can fit into your pocket. It takes up about the same amount of space as your phone would. Making it ultra-portable and convenient. And the way that Pocket VR folds up, it’s so that the lenses on the Pocket VR are protected. The last thing you’d want to do is have scratches on those lenses that you use to watch virtual reality, especially that close to your eyes.
What Speck is doing here with the Pocket VR is using their own Speck CandyShell case, and putting the Pocket VR on top of it. So this way they are selling you two items, and it also means that only a few devices will work with the Pocket VR. Speck is currently only supporting the Galaxy S6 (as well as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S) with the Pocket VR, but hopefully we’ll see that open up in the near future, as Cardboard did (finally supporting the Nexus 6 this year).
All of the Cardboard apps that are already in Google Play, will indeed work with Pocket VR. So unlike Gear VR or HTC’s Vive, you don’t need to use another app store. Pocket VR will be available this Spring and will cost you $69.95, that includes the Pocket VR along with a CandyShell case from Speck. Unlike the Gear VR or the HTC Vive, you will need to hold up the Pocket VR to your face when using it. Similar to Google Cardboard. While this might be a turn off for some, luckily those that would be interested in the Pocket VR should already have a Samsung Galaxy S6, which means you can pick up the Gear VR for just $99 and get an entirely different experience. One that most people will likely prefer, thanks to Oculus.
