Spotify and Genius have teamed up together to “go behind the music” as Spotify says in their blog post today. This new partnership is going to allow users of Spotify to go ahead and see what the song lyrics of their favorite songs actually mean. They are starting out with the Hip Hop genre and will then start on the Hits and hit every other genre in their library as well. The playlists here, are curated by both Genius and Spotify. They allow you to go “Behind the Lyrics” of each song. In addition to lyrics, these songs on the playlists will also include fun facts, annotations as well as stories from the artist. It’s the latest attempt for Spotify to bring artists closer to their fans. Something Apple has attempted to do with Apple Music when that launched last year.
Theses three artists – Pusha T, Tinashe, and Diplo – will take you Behind the Lyrics today, and share with us their personal take on their favorite tracks that are available on Spotify. And many more will be added in the next few days. Each playlist will have around 40 songs or so. Definitely enough to get the hang of this whole feature that Spotify and Genius have put together for us. Spotify also says that they are “just getting started” and to expect the “Genius treatment on more music you love soon”.
“I’ve partnered with Genius and Spotify to take you ‘Behind The Lyrics’ of my greatest songs because every word that I write means something to me,” says Pusha T.
Spotify says that the playlists are rolling out to iOS devices now (the iPhone 4S won’t be getting it though), and there’s no word on when Android will get it. A bit disappointing seeing as it is a playlist, not an app update. It’s yet again, another showing of iOS getting priority over Android. This has become quite popular with Spotify in the past year as well. Android will likely see it in a few weeks, we hope. We’ll be sure to let everyone know when it is available on Android.
