As the world becomes more connected, WiFi ready devices and products that are considered part of the Internet of Things will end up much more common in the home, like wireless security cameras. WiFi connected security cameras are nothing new and there are already a number of them available on the market, like the Nest Cam for example (formerly known as Drop Cam), and now a new model from Oco called the Oco2 is being shown off at CES 2016 this week as a follow up to their first option that launched last year. This new model brings in a new design as well as a few new improvements and features.
First up, the cost. The Oco2 will set consumers back $149 which isn’t bad at all compared to the Nest Cam which currently goes for around $175 on Amazon. This isn’t a huge savings but it’s still a savings and it’ll end up offering many of the same things. The Oco2 supports both WiFi and Bluetooth connections, and while users can opt into the cloud storage service for a small monthly fee which allows Oco to handle the storage of any video captured by the security cameras, the Oco2 comes with an integrated microSD card slot as well so users can keep the footage stored locally if they would prefer to keep the video on site and more easily accessible.
The Oco2 security camera isn’t just a camera, it also contains a microphone and audio speaker which allows it to be used as a two-way communication system, it has night vision capabilities so it can see and capture footage even in the dark, and it’s able to sense motion and audio and alert homeowners with notifications that can be received on their mobile device via the companion app. Oco2’s app is compatible with both Android and iOS so it can be used with either major mobile platform. At $149, the Oco2 WiFi security camera is a sensible and decent option for those who want to set up this kind of security, although there is still a bit of a wait on the units as the planned launch timeframe is slated for sometime this Spring.
