Chinese manufacturer, Coolpad, has launched two smartphones into the European market, with the new Torino S and Porto S devices coming to selected countries in the next few weeks, before being rolled out across the region. These devices have quite different core specifications. The Torino S is based around a 2.5D, 4.7-inch 720p (that is, 1,280 by 720 pixel) display panel. The device is powered by the 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 System-on-Chip, which is backed up by 2 GB of RAM and the Adreno 306 GPU. The device also comes with 16 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD card slot, although there’s no word on the maximum capacity this can handle. The Torino S uses an 8MP rear camera complete with a LED flash and a 5MP front facing selfie unit, a high performance fingerprint scanner (and Coolpad claim that this can unlock the device in half a second, or capture photographs in under a quarter of a second). The Torino S also includes a universal Infrared (IR) port, which can be used to control consumer electronics. The Torino S is a dual SIM device offering 4G LTE and uses Cool US 8.0 over Android 5.1 Lollipop. Unfortunately, the battery is 1,800 mAh, which is a little small compared with many of today’s similar devices.
The Coolpad Porto S uses a larger 5.0-inch, 720p display, purported to be an IPS LCD panel. The Qualcomm chipset has been replaced by the MediaTek MT6735P, which has a maximum clock speed of 1.0 GHz and is backed up by 1 GB of RAM and the ARM Mali-T720 GPU. The Porto S comes with 8 GB of internal memory plus a MicroSD slot that supports cards of up to 64 GB capacity – more on this later. There’s a rear mounted 8MP camera, complete with a LED flash, and a front facing 2MP camera. Again, the device runs Android 5.1 Lollipop under the Cool UI 8.0 interface. It has a slightly larger 2,000 mAh capacity battery and as with the Torino S, is a dual SIM device, offering 4G LTE, but one of the SIM slots is a hybrid MicroSD slot: customers can either have a dual SIM device with 8 GB of internal storage only, or a single SIM device with an available MicroSD slot
The Torino S will be available in White and Champagne colors, priced at €199. Meanwhile, the Porto S will be priced at €129, to be available in Germany and Switzerland by the end of the month. Coolpad have plans to roll out the device to other countries in due course. Speaking about the launch, Coolpad’s Head of European Business, Denny Qiu, said this: “Coolpad manufactures high quality products and we believe that our innovations are the key to success. With the introduction of the world’s first dual-SIM smartphone and the leadership in LTE smartphones in China, we have demonstrated our ability to innovate. Now we want to promote our innovation story in Europe.”
