One of the big talking points of last year was ‘security’ and this led to the introduction of a number of new handsets which place security and privacy above all else. One of those which was announced early in the year (actually during MWC 2015) and become available towards the end of the year was the GranitePhone. In terms of the specs, the GranitePhone comes equipped with a 5-inch display, which makes use of a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Inside the GranitePhone comes equipped with 2GB RAM and is powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Octa-core processor. Storage on offer comes in the form of 16GB internal storage, while cameras include a 16-megapixel rear camera which is coupled with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Additionally, the GranitePhone comes powered by a 2,700 mAh battery and comes running on a forked version of Android, in the form of Granite OS.
This is a smartphone which was the result of a partnership between smartphone manufacturer ARCHOS and security and encryption-focused company, SIKUR. As to be expected with any ‘super secure’ smartphone, the use of the Granite OS ensures that all aspects of the device are encrypted to protect the owner and keeping their data and privacy intact, including the encryption of all calls, texts and other means of communication. Granite OS also disables geo-tracking and is said to be inaccessible by any backdoors.
During MWC, we were able to get a better look at the GranitePhone in more detail and check out a number of its features which are designed to offer the increase in security. Granite OS comes equipped with its suite of apps, dubbed Granite Apps and it is these which look to offer the increase in privacy by encryption all data it sends and receives. If you are someone who likes to install third-party apps, then this might not be the phone for you as one of the ways it adds to its security is by disabling the ability to install certain apps.
