The Nextbit Robin is an interesting bird, no pun intended. It’s not like most other smartphones that are on the market right now. We mean that both in the design as well as the hardware and software. The design is a bit different as we have a two-toned color version as well as the phone being pretty flat with sharp corners instead of rounded ones. The software is the really interesting thing here with the Robin, as the smartphone runs mostly in the cloud. Essentially what it does is it offloads data to the cloud – when you’re connected to WiFi – so you never run out of room on your Robin. It will even offload apps, however just tapping the icon will bring the app back in a matter of seconds – additionally your app data is still present so you won’t need to relogin to the app.
It’s an interesting device indeed. Which started out as a Kickstarter last year, and hit its goal pretty quickly. It then went on sale last week on their website and actually sold out quite quickly – showing just how many people have interest in the device. Nextbit has replenished their stock and has the Robin on sale once again. So if you’ve been looking to get your Nextbit Robin, you can head to their site and throw down $399 to get your own Robin.
The Robin is available in midnight and mint colors. It also has a 5.2-inch 1080p display, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Now Nextbit doesn’t sell the Robin in other storage configurations because they also give you 100GB of data alongside that 32GB of storage. So that should definitely be enough for most people. The big thing that people were worried about with the Nextbit Robin was data fees. Since it’s effectively pushing your content back and forth to the cloud all the time, that can really deplete your data cap, especially in a world of data limits. Luckily, Nextbit has made it possible to only allow the Robin to sync your data to the cloud over WiFi (in fact, this is by default), although you are still able to do it over a mobile network if you prefer.
