Virtual Reality and VR headsets are some of the hottest topics in tech right now, and just about every major company in the technology industry has their hands in the cookie jar when it comes to development of hardware. This includes companies like HTC with their wildly popular Vive headset, as well as Google who is now rumored to have new VR hardware out in consumer hands before the end of the year that could rival the Gear VR from Samsung. Sony also has VR technology on the way in the form of PlayStation VR, and a new rumor from Game Stop suggests that Sony could end up launching the unit sometime this Fall.
Game Stop CEO Paul Raines was interviewed by Fox Business, stating that the video game shop will launch the “Sony product” in the Fall, albeit without mentioning any specific times or dates. Even still, prior to this statement from Raines the only time window known for a launch of Sony’s VR headset was the 2016 calendar year, and although many people could probably have speculated that it would likely happen to launch closer toward the end of the year, this gives interested consumers who own a PS4 to connect the PlayStation VR up to a more definitive time frame of when to expect a possible launch.
If Sony does launch the PlayStation VR in the Fall, that puts them months behind the their two biggest competitors in gaming oriented VR headsets, the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, both of which are expected to launch in just the next couple of months. There is still no exact pricing on the PlayStation VR either, although it’s widely speculated that the price will fall somewhere around the cost (or possibly a little bit under) of the PlayStation 4 console. In addition to a potential Fall launch for Sony’s VR product, Raines also points out that VR is potentially going to be a huge business market, and that they’re getting ready for what they feel will be an absolutely huge launch in technology. For Sony fans, the leap into VR may still be months away, but that simply gives more time for excitement to build up.
