The Super Bowl is this Sunday, February 7th. For advertisers, it’s the biggest event to showcase your ads. In fact, the game isn’t just about Football, but also the ads. Commercials during the Super Bowl last year were around $4.5 million each, and the longer the ad the more cash each company will pay out. A big reason why the game is so much longer than any other NFL game through the season and post season.
Last year, T-Mobile sought out Kim Kardashian for their commercial. Many T-Mobile customers weren’t too happy with T-Mobile using her to promote the company on the national stage. This year, the company is using Drake and his Hotline Bling music video. As you can see in the 30-second long commercial that’s down below, they show how other carriers would mess up Drake’s Hotline Bling song. When the director comes up and wants to add changes to Drake’s song, the changes come after he says “when you say call me on my cell phone” they add “device eligible for upgrade after 24 months”. They also include the fact that streaming music will incur wireless data fees. Both of which are moves from T-Mobile’s Uncarrier announcements in the last few years. Getting rid of contracts and adding Music Freedom.
That isn’t the entire commercial though, and we’ll have to wait until Sunday to see exactly what T-Mobile has up their sleeves for the big game. But it already seems to be better than last year’s Kim Kardashian Super Bowl ad which the company ran. It’s more than likely that Verizon, Sprint and AT&T will also be running commercials during the Super Bowl on Sunday.
T-Mobile is also doing their #BallBusterChallenge right now, driving around the US in places that you don’t expect T-Mobile to have coverage. They are having Verizon customers come out and do a few tests side-by-side a T-Mobile smartphone. Testing calls, texts and data speeds. And if T-Mobile wins two out of the three, then the customer gets to hold up a sign saying T-Mobile’s better (actual wording is a bit different) for a picture, but if Verizon wins then the customer gets $100 in cash instantly. T-Mobile is definitely looking to win over some more customers and between the #BallBusterChallenge and this new commercial, they should do pretty well.
