Walmart Family Mobile, most people probably haven’t heard of, unless they shop in the electronics section of Walmart. It’s an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that runs on T-Mobile’s network. They offer pretty competitive prices and data buckets. On Tuesday, Walmart announced that they are adding a 10GB plan to their offerings. So you can get unlimited talk and text along with 10GB of data for just $49.88, which makes this a pretty attractive option. Since it’s running on T-Mobile’s network, it means you can bring over your own smartphone, like the Moto X Pure Edition, Nexus 6P or any other GSM smartphone.
Other plans that Walmart Family Mobile offer include unlimited talk and text with 1GB of data for $30, another with 5GB of data for $40 per month. The data caps are for high-speed data, so once you hit that data cap your speeds will be slowed to 2G speeds. Pretty typical of what most other MVNO’s do as well as T-Mobile and Sprint.
In addition to adding the 10GB plan for $49.88 per month, Walmart is also launching their ‘Data Saver’ service. It optimizes video data and streams it at 480p, saving you data, similar to the way that Binge On does from T-Mobile. Additionally, similar to T-Mobile’s Binge On, Data Saver from Walmart Family Mobile can also be turned on or off whenever you wish. Data Saver is an opt-out service, so it’ll be automatically turned on, but luckily you are able to turn it off whenever you choose.
This new plan and Data Saver are now available on Walmart Family Mobile. If you are a customer, you can upgrade to the 10GB plan and also take advantage of the Data Saver service now. Walmart Family Mobile is offered at all Walmart locations nationwide, in addition to the other prepaid options that they offer. Which include Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, T-Mobile Prepaid, Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile, just to name a few. Walmart launched their own MVNO as a way to prove that prepaid carriers don’t offer the best devices or the best network. While Walmart doesn’t offer the Galaxy S6, or LG G4 on their network, you can still buy one and bring it over, as it is a BYOD (Bring your own device) network.
