Xiaomi Gains Traction on Fitbit in Wearables Race

Fitbit has been in the wearables world for quite some time. They’ve released a number of wearables that are really, really popular these days. Currently they offer the Fitbit One, Flex, Charge, Charge HR, Surge, Blaze and Alta. All of which are popular in different price points and segments of the market. Xiaomi has released a few fitness trackers in the past year or so, that has helped them gain some traction in the wearables race. The biggest reason Xiaomi is gaining, is due to the price of their products. Many of them are under $20, meanwhile Fitbit’s cheapest model is around $79.

In the latest report from IDC in regards to wearables, every manufacturer saw growth (except for Apple, but that was due to the Apple Watch not being out in time to be compared to the year prior). Fitbit dropped from a 37.9% market share to now a 26.9% share. However the amount of wearables they sold increased by about 93.2%. Meanwhile, Xiaomi saw an increase of 951.8% year over year. That’s a pretty huge increase in terms of wearables being sold. However their market share jumped from 4% to 15.4%, still a pretty sizeable jump, but not enough to overtake Fitbit just yet. The top five consist of Fitbit, Xiaomi, Apple, Garmin and Samsung. In 2015, Samsung only released one wearable in the Gear S2, which wasn’t  actually available until the middle of the fourth quarter. Their market share did drop from 9.2% to about 4%. However, their wearables sold jumped about 18% over that year.

Wearables is still a pretty new area for many manufacturers. Some of you might be a bit surprised to see Garmin coming in at the fourth spot. Garmin is quite popular for their fitness trackers and fitness smartwatches. While they aren’t as popular as Fitbit yet, they are still up there, with the likes of the Vivoactive and Vivofit which the company sells. Interesting to see that there is not a single Android Wear manufacturer listed in the top 5 (Samsung is technically an Android Wear manufacturer, however they have only made one smartwatch in the Gear Live in 2014, and haven’t done anything since with Android Wear). That shows just how popular, or unpopular smartwatches are. Considering most of these are fitness trackers.
