For those following the mobile tech news, it seems increasingly harder to avoid news reports on virtual reality. This certainly seems to be the next big thing and only looks to be gaining in interest as time goes on. A report from Digi-Capital yesterday made the point that in the first two months of 2016, investment in virtual and augmented reality has already eclipsed the total investment for these industries during the whole of 2015. A feat which does emphasize the exponential growth the market is now seeing and expected to see going forward.
Following on from that report and it now looks as though Amazon is one of the companies who are planning on getting in on the virtual reality action. According to a job listing which has now been spotted on Glassdoor, Amazon is looking for a Software Development Manager for its virtual reality team. While no official announcement on any hardware (or software) has come through from Amazon, the job listing does seem to suggest that they are keen to be part of the next wave of virtual reality content, one way or the other.
While the listing does not provide detailed information on Amazon’s plans, it does provide some fundamental virtual reality aspirations. Firstly, the job posting does note that the Software Development Manager will be responsible for heading up Amazon’s “Virtual Reality team“. The listing further goes on to note that the Software Development Manager will also be responsible for “building the Virtual Reality experience within Amazon Video“. This last point being of particular interest as it does seem to suggest that Amazon has some goals of combining aspects of its Amazon Video service with that of virtual reality. Of course, with the job posting only going live in the last couple of days, it does stand to reason that we are some way off seeing any form of official announcement from Amazon on what exactly they have planned for virtual reality. Although, at the very least the job listing does look to provide some confirmation that Amazon will be part of the movement towards virtual reality in 2016 and beyond.
