When Android Wear first launched, people were excited that they’d be able to get a similar experience on smartwatches to the one they had with their smartphones. Of course, as it turns out, Google had something very different in mind for Android Wear, and aside from apps sharing some common DNA, Android Wear is very much a wearable-focused platform. That hasn’t stopped developer Appfour from shoehorning more complicated Android apps into Android Wear devices the world over. They first gave us a working web browser on our wrists, then a video player and now they’re bringing us a Calendar app to our wrists.
The new app, subtly named “Calendar for Android Wear” does pretty much what you think it does. More than just a display of what dates and days are in a month – like other offerings – however, Appfour’s calendar allows people to add an event with their voice as well as scroll through their calendar in 7 day, 4 day and 1 day views, with the ability to get precise details of events and even edit them. It also features an always-on display as well, which basically makes whatever you’re viewing turn to black and take the place of your watch face. Why this might be helpful is unclear, but we’re sure there are more than a few users out there that will find a use for such a thing. While the calendar is free to download, a one-off in-app purchase is required to unlock the aforementioned ability to create and edit events, and the one-off purchase will also allow for configurable layouts and a change of color, too.
This sort of thing is only really going to be useful for those Android Wear users that like to spend a lot of time configuring and tinkering with certain apps, rather than those that use the platform as a way of getting quick information whenever it’s needed. Regardless, it now looks like there’s nothing Appfour won’t shoehorn into a smartwatch running Android Wear, and this new calendar now goes hand-in-hand with the likes of a Google Docs app, a Web Browser and a Video Player for your wrist.
