We all love taking a stroll down memory lane and seeing what we were doing this time last year, or even two years ago, three years ago and so forth. It’s definitely a fun feature that Facebook has added to their social network, which has now been a feature for a year. “On This Day” brings you posts you’ve posted on this day in previous years. It also shows you who you became friends with on that day. Facebook got the idea from Timehop which uses all of your social media accounts to show you what you did a year ago that day and so forth. Facebook’s feature is arguably much more popular as well as easier to use since it’s integrated into Facebook.
In the first year, Facebook’s “On This Day” has raked up about 60 million daily active users. That’s quite the feat, although there is still plenty of room to grow. Considering the entire platform has around 1 billion daily active users right now. On This Day can be activated to send you notifications around 8-9am each day so you can take a stroll down memory lane in the morning before work.
Facebook, much like Twitter, is always looking for ways to keep their users on their platform and keep them on there longer. With On This Day, it does just that, and it’s also a feature that you can turn on or off at will. A pretty nice idea for most people, because not everyone wants to stroll down memory lane, especially if the memories might be bad ones. However, Facebook says that their AI is good enough to tell if the memories that started out good actually turned into bad memories. It will decide to omit those memories from On This Day.
While 60 million users use On This Day each day, about 150 million users have signed up for the daily notifications. So this means that many people are getting the notifications, but are not checking what happened on that day each and every day. If you want to check out On This Day, just head over to Facebook.
