T-Mobile is getting ready for a few big launches this week, with the LG G5 going up for pre-order tomorrow and launching on Friday, along with the iPhone SE and iPad Pro launching on Thursday. But that’s not all that T-Mobile has in store for this week, as a leak just came out that the carrier is looking to release data-only Simple Choice plans on Wednesday. Data only plans is something that many have been looking for, for quite some time. Mostly due to the fact that most of us don’t use minutes, as we don’t make traditional phone calls any more. Or at least as often. According to the leak though, it looks like customers can get 2GB of data for as low as $20 per month.
Additionally, it looks like 6GB is coming in at $35, 10GB for $50, 14GB for $65, 18GB for $80 and 22GB for $95. Which when you think about it, this actually come out much cheaper than the existing Simple Choice plans which give you 2GB of data for $50, 6GB for $65 and 10GB for $75. A bit unfortunate that there isn’t an unlimited option here, but T-Mobile has said they are looking to move away from unlimited data.
The memo also notes that any smartphone that can use a smartphone rate plan is eligible. However for BlackBerries, only those that run BlackBerry 10 or are the BlackBerry Priv are eligible. It’s currently not available on T-Mobile’s website, but if this is indeed going live on Wednesday, then we should see an announcement from T-Mobile’s John Legere on Wednesday about the change. This is going to be great for those that are just in need of data and don’t need any minutes. Like their other plans, once you use up your data you’ll likely be slowed down to 2G speeds. Although that is not yet confirmed.
It’ll definitely be nice to have the choice to have a plan with minutes versus one with just data – which by the way, still gets unlimited texting. It’s all about being the Uncarrier and that’s exactly what this change is. Giving everyone choice, because not everyone’s needs are the same.
