MediaTek is a very well recognized name these days for anyone who’s interested in the Android eco-system. However, the Taiwanese semiconductor company’s SoC solutions are not restricted to just Android smartphones and tablets. MediaTek makes cost-efficient SoCs that power a wide variety of devices including smartphones and tablets for sure, but also televisions, DVDs and Blu-rays. While Qualcomm continues to be the undisputed leader of the mobile processor market, MediaTek has managed to launch some extremely interesting products over the past few years, and is currently one of the leading names in the industry. The company has now come out with its earnings report for the month of February, 2016, which shows that it has earned consolidated revenues of NT$13.24 billion ($404.7 million) in the past month.
The amount represents a 36.9 percent revenue increase over February, 2015, but a 37.9 percent decline over January this year, when the company earned as much as NT$21.32 billion ($650 million). In spite of the substantial dip in MediaTek’s revenues last month, analysts believe that the company is on track to meet its guidance of NT$52.5 – 57.4 billion ($1.6 billion – 1.75 billion), which will still mean a decline of between seven to fifteen percent on a QoQ basis. Compared to the lull MediaTek is experiencing recently, the last three months of 2015 were pretty remarkable for the company, as it earned its best-ever quarterly revenues during the final quarter of last year.
MediaTek recently announced its much-anticipated Helio P20 chipset as a follow-up to the P10 it had launched last year. The chip will reportedly be manufactured on a 16nm FinFET Plus process, and will reportedly come with several improvements over and above the last-gen Helio P10. Along with the Helio ‘P’ chipsets, MediaTek also designs the Helio ‘X’ SoCs, which are actually the flagship, no-compromise chipsets from the Taiwanese company. The current top-shelf Helio X chip happens to be the Helio X20, which comes with a deca-core CPU architecture that incorporates eight Cortex-A53 cores and two Cortex-A72 cores. Recent reports claimed that the SoC has an unfortunate habit of overheating, but MediaTek was quick to debunk those reports. The company also recently announced a bunch of new chipsets aimed at IoT devices, smart wearables and home entertainment products.
