We already knew Samsung has been working on a new C-Pen stylus for a while now, but apart from its model number, EJ-UW700, and the fact that it’s obviously going to be based on Bluetooth technology like the original 2012 gadget, no additional info was known at the time. Well, that has just changed thanks to a listing from a German retailer Cyberport which went live earlier this morning. As stated on Cyberport’s web shop which you can see for yourself by following the link below, the brand new Samsung C-Pen is designed for the company’s latest Windows 10 tablet, the Galaxy Tab Pro S. The device is consequently powered by Microsoft’s DirectInk inking platform for tracing lines drawn with styluses. This technology launched alongside Windows 10 last year and is already being utilized by numerous tablets on the market.
The new Samsung C-Pen differentiates between 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is exactly half of what the S-Pen that comes packed with Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is offering. In other words, not much has changed in four years in regards to the difference between the latest version of C-Pen and S-Pen as the latter is still a superior input device. Regardless of that, 1,024 is still not a small number and it should at the very least be good enough for most applications, even if you tend to dab into advanced photo editing with software like Photoshop. The new C-Pen communicates with its accompanying tablet using Bluetooth 4.0 LE and is equipped with back and erase buttons, as well as a battery which should last up to 162 hours. It’s currently unknown whether this means that the stylus has a high-capacity battery, is extremely energy-efficient, or both, but it’s commendable nonetheless.
Getting the new Samsung C-Pen will set you back €59.90, or around $65 which means it’s above most other similar accessories made by the South Korean company in terms of price. However, given how it’s designed for a high-end Galaxy Tab Pro S whose 128GB version can be pre-ordered for about $1,200, it’s not at all surprising. Naturally, as this is basically a standard Bluetooth stylus with some extra features, most of its functionality will likely translate well to other smartphones and tablets, though that’s yet to be confirmed. We should know more in a few weeks when the C-Pen is expected to hit the market and in the meantime, there are also some new S Pen patents Samsung recently acquired that we can be excited about.
